Welcome to my new series on bridal updos and getting ready for the big day. From April through June, I will be sharing various updos, tips on make-up, the do’s and don’ts of wedding hair, veil placing, and bridesmaid updos.
Today, I’ll show you how to create the messy chignon pictured above.
For this hairstyle, start with loosely curled hair. This will make it easier to create the messy look that we want in the chignon. If you desire more volume, backcomb the top and run through to soften with your fingers. Then, put your hair in a low ponytail.
Next, section off a small portion of hair from the ponytail and secure with a clip.
Clip that small section of hair out of the way and backcomb the rest of the hair, smoothing out with your fingers. Then, take the ends of the ponytail and place them above the ponytail, tucking them behind with bobby pins. This loop will be the start of your chignon. And because it’s “messy” you don’t have to worry about making sure that every hair is in place.
Bring some hair from the loop you created over to the left side, securing with bobby pins. Then, bring some hair from the loop to the right side, securing with more bobby pins. You are trying to make the loop tighter to the head so that you don’t see the hole in the loop.
Start twisting parts inside the chignon and secure them with a bobby pin. Then, take the section of hair that you put in a clip and make a few small loops out of that. Secure the loops (pin curls) to the top of the chignon with some bobby pins. When you are happy with the look of your updo, spray generously with hairspray.
As far as veil placement, you have two options.
- Veil above the updo: Place the veil directly above the chignon, and slide it into the chignon, pinning with bobby pins for extra support.
- Veil below the updo: Place the veil directly below the chignon, and slide it up into the chignon, pinning with bobby pins for extra support.
