Mason Jar Planters [Part 1]

Wouldn’t you love having fresh herbs right in your kitchen when you need them?  Scroll down to see how I turned mason jars into planters for six different herbs.


Below is a list of herbs I chose to plant:

  • Basil

  • Rosemary

  • Oregano

  • Thyme

  • Cilantro

  • Parsley

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Herb seeds (as many as you wish, I chose six different ones.)

  • Quart sized Mason Jars

  • Small rocks

  • Miracle Grow

  • Trowel

  • Spray bottle

  • Newspapers

  • Sharpie

Before filling your jars, wash them with hot soapy water.  Then let them air dry.

Put some newspaper down on a hard surface to ensure an easier clean up.  Then you can set the mason jars with their corresponding seed packet.  Write the name of the plant on the bottom of each mason jar with a sharpie.  Eventually you will know which plant is which, but this will be really helpful once those seeds start growing!

Next, fill the bottom of the mason jar with small rocks.  I found these at the dollar store, and rinsed them off before placing them into the jar.  Fill the mason jar about 1/4 of the way with the rocks.  This will prevent the roots from getting wet and moldy since there are no holes at the bottom of this jar for the excess water to escape.

You’ll want to use some sort of seed starting potting mix.  We had some of this from planting our rose bush, hydrangea bush, and lilies last spring.

Fill that mason jar with dirt to the shoulder of the mason jar, packing it down lightly as you go.

The package of seeds will inform you on how far apart the seeds need to be from each other, as well as how much dirt you’ll need to put on top of them.  For Cilantro, I threw in about four seeds to ensure that at least one of them makes it.  Then I covered them up with 1/4 inches of dirt.

After covering the seeds, pack the dirt down gently and spray with water.  You should only spray enough to moisten the top layer of dirt.  The reason for spraying is because it allows for even and gradual distribution.  If you poured water in there, it might drown the seeds.

In the beginning you’ll want to keep those jars moist, spraying at least 3 times a day.  Also, choose a spot for them to sit while they grow.  The herbs that I chose need full sun, so I put them by my kitchen window, which gets the most sun.


This little stinker decided to “help” by pulling the newspaper off of the table.  Thank goodness for quick mommy reflexes!  Otherwise my mason jars would have crashed on the floor.

I’m excited to see these plants grow!  Hopefully I can take decent care of them, and keep them alive long enough to enjoy them!
